Early detection may save your life. CHI St. Joseph Health’s new lung screening program seeks to find lung cancers early, when they are most treatable.
Why consider a lung cancer screening?
Did you know most lung cancers do not cause symptoms until the later stages, when treatment is less likely to succeed? Now, there’s a way to detect lung cancer earlier through low-dose computed tomography (LDCT). Research recently conducted by the National Cancer Institute showed that LDCT performed better than chest X-rays at detecting lung cancers early before the patient had any symptoms and decreased the risk of dying from lung cancer by 20 percent, even among heavy smokers. The screening can also help identify suspicious, pre-cancerous nodules in the lungs.
Most healthcare plans cover low dose CT scans at little or no cost to the patient. Check with your provider to find out if your plan is participating in this exciting new screening program.
