Spiritual Care is an essential dimension to providing holistic care at CHI St. Joseph Health. As a Catholic Healthcare System, we value the diversity of ways in which faith is expressed and we’re committed to seeing that the faith, beliefs and values of our patients and families are honored.

Our goal is to be aware of each patient’s spirituality and how it influences their healthcare decisions. By doing so, we can bring additional comfort and an increased sense of well-being to every aspect of care.

Our Spiritual Care volunteers visit our patients and their families to offer emotional and spiritual support to ease the stress of being in the hospital.

Spiritual Care volunteer opportunities.
  • Care Partners – Assigned to the ER, Day Surgery, and the Med/Surg Units. These volunteers offer special care and attention to patients and families through compassion, care and even prayer, when it is requested.
  • Eucharistic Ministers – Visit Catholic patients throughout the Regional hospital and Skilled Nursing & Rehab facilities to offer communion to our Roman Catholic patients.
  • Chaplain Internship – A unique opportunity available to the community, graduate students and our volunteers who are looking to broaden their understanding of healthcare and how to be at the bedside. Requires 10 hours each week for 10 weeks. Call the Spiritual Care Department to inquire when the next internship is scheduled.
Flexible scheduling. Complete training.

Scheduling is flexible, depending on your needs. All volunteers will be trained before they go out on the units on their own.

If you feel called to any of these special ministries, please contact Chaplain Mary Clare Carden, Director of Spiritual Care, to schedule an interview.  She can be reached at mcarden@st-joseph.org or 979.776.4994.  Approval by the Spiritual Care Department for these assignments is required before you can begin your volunteer orientation process.
