New Parent Education

At CHI St. Joseph Health, we know that bringing your baby home is exciting. We also know that, as new parents, you’re feeling a strong sense of responsibility. That’s why we offer several new parent education classes to teach you important information.

Our new parent education classes offer education and support from time of pregnancy through the time you take your baby home—it’s all about helping you give your baby a healthy start.

Each new parent education class is offered every month.

Breastfeeding Course
This course teaches techniques expectant mothers and fathers will need to make breastfeeding easier. Basic anatomy and physiology of the breast, positions for the mother and baby while breastfeeding, how to get started, and how to manage milk supply and demand are all discussed. See breastfeeding class schedule here

Prepared Childbirth Course
This course prepares parents-to-be for the arrival of the baby by teaching them the physical process and stages of labor, comfort measures, body mechanics, pain management, plus breathing and relaxation techniques. A tour of CHI St. Joseph Health Labor and Delivery will be held at the end of class. Please select a childbirth course that ends approximately 4 weeks before your baby is due. Wear comfortable clothing and bring two pillows for floor exercises. See prepared childbirth class schedule here

Newborn Care
This course teaches techniques to assist a mother and one additional caregiver with skills needed to make infant care easier. Feeding patterns, comfort strategies, homes safety, diapering and more are discussed in this informative course. See newborn class schedule here

Infant CPR
This American Heart Association course is designed for family members and friends who care for infants and want to learn basic infant CPR and choking rescue. This course is not to be taken if a course completion card is required. If the 6:00 pm course is full, you may be placed in the 7:00 pm course. See infant CPR class schedule here
